Great start in your participation to our forum.

I'm not so interested in crosses, but you're doing a nice job.

Great, that's good to know. I wasn't sure if you were trying to keep storage needs lower here.  I can now see my upload limit has increased, so will make sure to post new images direct to the forum 👍

I'm currently catching up on some of the older wild threads, like your Bolivia trip ❤️

Thank you, also thanks for all the amazing content you have here.

Having grown many of varieties over the years I'm now more focussed on two areas, growing my own crosses and growing wilds.  I no longer feel the need to grow anything and everything 🙂

My wilds failed this year, so to improve my chances I've decided to try and start some now so that I can establish them as small plants ahead of next year.  I'd rather manage the plant size than miss out on my wilds again next year. I expect severe pruning may be required!

I've recently started germination for:

  • C.Flexuosum
  • C.Praetermissium, seeds from an old grow of mine and unsure what specific variety this was. I like surprises 🤣
  • C.Lanceolatum
  • C.Galapagoense
  • C.Cardenasii (CGN 20497)
  • C.Tovarii

Some of my seeds were quite old so may not germinate but this will give me time ahead of next season to try again. I also have a few other wild varieties that I plan to grow next year but will need to start those later as I have limited indoor grow space.

Not quite as good as your photography I've seen as I review the older expedition posts. Fantastic work in the forest, heat and rain!

X004 crossing project

Tasmanian Habanero (C.Chinense) x Giant White Habanero (C.Chinense)

An F2 plant that is giving pods which ripen from light green -> cream/pink -> darker peach

A different F2 plant with more wrinkled pods, ripens from dark green -> orange -> red

Not much to report as the cold weather towards the end of my season is slowing down everything.

I have harvested some ripe pods from the red phenotype F2 plant on my X004 cross (Tasmanian Habanero x Giant White Habanero). This plant has pods with strong folds / pleats which wasn't a trait on either of the parents. Small number of F3 seeds in each of these pods.

On the F2 peach phenotype shown in my previous post, the first 4 small ripe pods have given me zero seeds. Hoping for some from the remaining pods if I can get them to ripen so that I can continue a peach F3 line.

Also harvested another small handful of Mini Olive Rocoto today. It's my first season growing these and I love the flavour of them when I've tasted them raw.  As an experiment I am going to dehydrate and powder this small harvest to see how much of the great flavour is retained, lost or enhanced when making powder from them.  I think it should be good.

One of those random crosses you make whilst you have the plants growing. Cross made on 28th July, fully ripe pod harvested today.

An interspecific cross attempt, Brazilian Starfish Orange (C.Baccatum) x Jays Peach Ghost Scorpion (C.Chinense).

Small pod but a good amount of F1 seeds. They look OK given this is an interspecific, seen much worse before! 🤣

These will need to wait until next year for a germination attempt as I already have too many things germinating.

Another F3 plant in the grow out of the red pheno line of my X011 cross has shown it's colour and shape. Yet another one that isn't red!  The latest pheno is a yellow-orange colour. 10 more F3 plants yet to indicate their colour.  On the red grow out I'm looking for the large 5 lobed red pheno shown in my avatar. I've also started to grow out one of the other F2 colour lines.

X006 crossing project

I'm currently growing F2 plants on this cross. Examples of phenotypes I've seen so far this year:

Some different colour transitions now happening on this F2 plant. The colours in the pictures are not as vivid because the weather is very grey.

With some better daylight today I almost completed my mission to get all colour transitions on this F2 in one photo. Not quite all but very close.

X006 (Fidlago Roxa x Fijian Bongo) F2 - Plant C

Showing a different pod shape and colour to Plant A and Plant B. Pod starts light green, no purple, appears to ripen to a peach/pink colour.

Managed to get some unlikely interspecific crosses to germinate, only 1 plant on each cross so far.

F1 for Brazilian Starfish Orange (C.Baccatum) x Jays Peach Ghost Scorpion (C.Chinense), 6 days to emerge.

F1 for Sugar Rush Stripey (C.Baccatum) x Pimenta De Neyde (C.Chinense), 13 days to emerge.

Mix of updates in this post.

Example of pods from two different accidental crosses I have this year, both from my own non-isolated Brazilian Starfish Red seeds.

Pod on the left (X031) is from the same plant that gave me the 'octopus' pheno, Did some Brix% measurements, was in the range 12.0-12.5, very sweet. It's more of a peach colour than the normal Starfish Orange.

Pod on the right (X018) is from the plant where the pods start a cream colour, rather than the normal green, and then ripens through to red. Also very sweet, Brix% was in the range 10.0-10.5.

20211030-x031-x018-accidents.jpg.3c9e2051aac31e3f94cc56587d379823.jpg

Been harvesting pods when available from some of my F2 crosses, all pods count when the weather is getting cold, big or small! Priority is getting next generation seeds from any pod.

Very pale peachy pods = X006 F2 Plant C (Fidalgo Roxa x Fijian Bongo), bigger unripe pods still on plant.

Red pods with purple blush = X006 F2 Plant B (Fidalgo Roxa x Fijian Bongo), pods more pointed than on Plant A.

Deep peach/mid-orange = X004 F2 Plant A (Tasmanian Habanero x Giant White Habanero).

20211101-x006f2c-x006f2b-x004f2a.jpg.63c3c51274c546c18a1fdeb0548f45ec.jpg

One of the F1 plants for a starfish crossing project I started this year is growing rapidly, very excited about this project 🙂

20211101growth.jpeg.610dbdf1f898dde548b46ae8da6b1fed.jpeg

Flowering phase starting on my bonchi. This is an Apricot Peach pheno F2 from my X011 project (Giant White Habanero x Fijian Bongo) which deserved to live longer. Needs a trim but trying to get some fruit set first. Will probably need some artificial light soon.

20211031-x011-f2-apricot-peach-bonchi.jpg.1050f99a895d8d67eb1c96b9f98bf3db.jpg

Finally, I thought I was lucky a few days ago to get germination of an F1 seed for Sugar Rush Stripey x Pimenta De Neyde.  The luck continues, second F1 has emerged, so 2/3 seeds. Fingers crossed for 3/3!
