Fatalii X Pimenta da Neyde F1 hybrid

Recommended Posts

varg

Last year I pollinated a Fatalii's (orange-yellow fruits variety) flower with pollen of Pimenta da Neyde's flower.

October 6 I got first seedlings of this hybrid.

Fatalii%2520X%2520Pimenta%2520da%2520Neyde%2520F1_6days_seedlings.jpg

On October 22 they looked so.

Fatalii%2520X%2520Pimenta%2520da%2520Neyde%2520F1_17days_seedlings.jpg

No one of them had any purple spot on them.

Because I don't have enough space to grow them all I left only one plant. In the end of last October it looked so.

You can see some purple spots on the leaves.

Later those spots disappeared.

52 days after the sprouting some flower buds appeared.

1 week later.

Fatalii%2520X%2520Pimenta%2520da%2520Neyde%2520F1_59days_1st_flower_buds.jpg

In the middle of December a first flower opened.

Some days later a first pod formed.

The fruit continued its forming...

Another fruit...

31 December. 2 first fruits still were growing.

Fatalii%2520X%2520Pimenta%2520da%2520Neyde%2520F1_87days_2nd_pod.jpg

February 4 the first fruit started to ripen.

Fatalii%2520X%2520Pimenta%2520da%2520Neyde%2520F1_127days_1st_pod_ripening2.jpg

17th February became a taste test day.

Fatalii%2520X%2520Pimenta%2520da%2520Neyde%2520F1_ripe_fruit2.jpg

Fatalii%2520X%2520Pimenta%2520da%2520Neyde%2520F1_ripe_fruit_sliced.jpg

The fruit had average C.chinense aroma and its heat level was medium (about 5-6 units of 10).

As far as you can see there were no anthocyanin spots on the fruit. I guess Fatalii has so called anthocyanin-less genes (maybe al6 or al7).

I think they prevented incompletely dominant anthocyanin gene A (which Pimenta da Neyde definitely has) to form purple spots on F1 hybrid fruits.

P.S. My speculations are based on this document.

Grazie! Don't mention it! smiley.gif

I like to take shots of pepper plants. The photo sessions are always successful because the pepper models are not so capricious like real models (I mean women wink.gif)

Si, you're right the pod is nothing to talk about and the result is disappointing for me. But I hope I'll enjoy F2 hybrid fruits unusual colours. wink.gif

Stay tuned! wink.gif

Don't think I'll manage to sow seeds of F1 hybrid this season because 2 first fruits contain not authentic F2 seeds.

I mean I was obligated to pollinate first flowers of my F1 hybrid with pollen from other varieties because first flowers of the hybrid plant didn't have their own pollen...

Interesting!

Yellow+purple=red pods

At thehotpepper.com Dulac tried to explain this phenomenon like this

Maybe the pimenta da Neyde has a dominant red color gene that isn't expressed, because it doesn't ripen (like jalapenos and other fruits). The purple is a separate process.

Maybe he is right... scratch_ones_head.gif

Thanks for your wonderful photos and for the link to the document too

Don't mention it, Claudio! :)

Hi Varg,

Congratulations! Your photos are beautiful.

Since you take some nice close-ups could you take some pics of the pollination process next time you cross peppers ???

It is very hard to find good pictures of the step by step process on the web.

Thanks, and keep up the good work,

Tony

Did you see this article? It's Fatalii's breeding guide. It's excellent and I don't think I could do something better. wink.gif

Hi Var,

you must be kidding right? :D I saw the the Fatali's breading guide. The Pics are nothing when compared to yours. You could really create something unique. At least this is my opinion. :good:

Wonderful!

The Fatalii's Guide to cross-pollination was already linked in the forum, somewhere, and it looks good.

Also Pixie recently posted some pictures on this argument.

However new photos about this tecnique are always welcome, because "repetita iuvant" ;)

Two fruits of the second bloom wave started to mature.

Fatalii%2520X%2520Pimenta%2520da%2520Neyde%2520F1_186days_pod_ripening4.jpg

Fatalii%2520X%2520Pimenta%2520da%2520Neyde%2520F1_186days_pod_ripening1.jpg

IMHO, they look more beautiful than the first fruits of the first blooming.

Very nice!

Let us know how much hot it is ...

The heat level of the first pod of the first blooming wave was about 5-6 points of 10.

Fatalii%2520X%2520Pimenta%2520da%2520Neyde%2520F1_ripe_fruit_sliced.jpg

So I don't think these fruits will be much hotter...

The heat level is still the same, i.e. about 5-6 units of 10. There is a clear sweetness in the taste of these hybrid peppers.
