SvenLittkowski 11 Posted March 2, 2013 Greetings from the warm, ever-sunny and beautiful, tropical Caribbean where all the pretty curvy girls of this planet are and where plenty hot chilies are, too! I am offering a permanent seed exchange between the Caribbean and Europe. I am in need of plant seeds, and in return I also offer seeds of all the tropical and exotic plants we got here, too - Capsicums included! I pay the air mail letter to you by myself, but for items marked with a (*) I request a mail participation of 12 Euro. To make more sense of such a 12 Euro parcel, you can put more than one type of seeds into such a parcel - same price (12 Euro for all seed types included in that one parcel). I think it's worth. Here's much more I can send to you, if you want to get Jamaican things. Most of these items are too big for a regular air mail letter, so I added prices to each item where fees apply (not all of them, some are free of cost). 01 Below: Of course. Jamaican chilies!!! And they come in all colors and sizes! Most distributed are Scotch Bonnet and Habanero and their hybrids (each in all colors), but deep in the rainforests between the ever-cold peaks of the Blue Mountains are also the unknown endemic-jamaican chili types. Jamaican Bird Chili - a small, elongated-oval medium-hot chili, coming in green, yellow and red varieties. But not shown on this photo. € 0,50 / 8-10 seeds of each type and all types together (one final price) 02 Below: three jamaican Jamaican Hot Scotch Bonnet (JHSB), and at the upper right one of the similar-tasting and similar smoky Habanero chilies. Between € 1,50 and 2,50 / Package 12 Below: Jamaica produces a number of own sweets, with which Italian men can treat their ladies in a much better way than with Italian sweets, ha ha ha: coconut cake (delicious, sweet, but not really a cake), cookies, baked things, and so on. SvenLittkowski 11 Posted April 2, 2013 It is always my pleasure to make other people glad. I am happy my letters have arrived. Callaloo grows easily, and fast. It will give you soon many delicious leaves, use them like a spicier type of spinach. Also, let the plants produce seeds, so you have always plenty of this good delicious present of Mother Nature. When preparing the plant for cooking, remove the strong strings along the stems, all other parts can be steamed and eaten. Enjoy! You could create some Growing Threads for the different plants. I would love to see the progress.
SvenLittkowski 11 Posted April 7, 2013 I got also some nice letters, in the meantime. Thanks a lot. Still needed: Capers (seeds). Did everybody of you receive my letters? Any first roots from those already put into soil?

Stefania 4,329 Posted April 27, 2013 Hi Sven, today one of the seeds you sent to Lonewolf was born ... it is Jamaican Sorrel (?)
SvenLittkowski 11 Posted May 3, 2013 Simply beautiful. Isn't it? Yes, should be Sorrel (Hibiscus sabdariffa). The big, fleshy blossoms make a great, delicious juice! Take only the ring of fleshy, red blossom leaves around the inner blossom (keep that one to still produce seeds), and put these red leaves in a container. Also add brown cane sugar (substitute with regular white sugar or sweetener), and grated or chopped or sliced ginger to them. Pour boiling water of this all, and keep - closed - at a warm place for at least one day and one night, up to three or even four days (the flavor will develop). Enjoy this Caribbean juice "on the rocks" (on ice).
SvenLittkowski 11 Posted May 8, 2013 Are there any new photos and updates?
SvenLittkowski 11 Posted September 29, 2013 Hi again! Are there any new photos? I would love to see updates on the plants! :-) Hey, I started a new seed exchange! It is here: https://www.pepperfriends.com/forum/topic/10636-jamaica-seeds-exchange/
Lonewolf 18,106 Posted September 29, 2013 Sorrel Buds of Sorrel (no flowers yet) Xanthosoma sagittifolium (?!) Looking at photos online, I think it's not the sowed plant, but a simple weed. It was born a long time after sowing, so may be other seeds contaminated the pot soil. Do you know if this plants are frost resistant? I'll sow your chile peppers seeds in the 2014 season (starting next January)
SvenLittkowski 11 Posted September 29, 2013 Hi! Both plants are what they were supposed to be. The sorrel is soon ready to be used for drinks - you don't wait un til the blossoms open. Before they open, you remove ONLY the outer ring of thick red blossom leaves but keep the inner blossom where it is to make it still producing seeds. Or you cut the entire thing but still use only the red outer leaves for the drink. I was wrong with the Latin (botanical) name of the Callaloo. The plant is right, but the name should be different. i used a wrong name, because there are several "Callaloos" as names for different plants. The correct name for this Callaloo is "Amaranthus viridis". And you could start to harvest here, too. Or wait for the seeds to get many more plants for bigger harvests. I don't think, Amarathus viridis ever met frost before, so I don't think it can survive. Use it like an annual. When harvesting, take the leaves and if you like, even the stem. Before cutting you have to remove the strong strings on the sides of the stem - simply tear them apart. Then chop everything into small pieces, and steam it in a pot, at the bottom a little bit of salt, some onion pieces in between and maybe some small ham pieces. use it for other dishes like European spinach. It is spicier.
