meatfreak 500 Posted March 2, 2013 With some delay I sowed last sunday, 24 february. First I had doubts to start at all since it was already getting late in season but with all the varieties I wanted to try I had to give it a try Keep in mind that the list was over 100 varieties, so I trimmed it down a lot. I intend to keep the 2 strongest plants of each variety except for the Piment d'Espelette. Some seeds are already old like the CGN (±8 years), so I got replacements in case the have popped up in 2 weeks. The first one to germinate after 3 days was the Coyote Zan White (C. Chinense). The rest followed quickly Now almost a week later 69% has germinated: 7-Pot Brain Strain Yellow 4/4 Aji Panca 3/0 Ampuis 3/3 Ancho 3/3 Bhut Jolokia Mustard F2 3/1 Brito's Mystery Peach F3 3/3 Bubblegum 7 F3 3/2 CGN 16905 3/0 CGN 22796 3/0 Chilhuacle Amarillo 3/3 Chilhuacle Negro 3/3 Chilhuacle Rojo 3/3 Chimayo 9/9 Chinese 5 Color 3/3 Coyote Zan White 3/3 Devil Serrano 3/3 Devil's Tongue White 3/0 Dulce de Espana 3/2 El Oro de Ecuador (PI 585244) 3/3 Elephant's Ear 3/3 Fish Pepper 3/3 Gochu 4/4 Green Chinense 3/0 Guajillo 4/4 Habanero Galapagos Isabella Red 3/3 Habanero White Giant 3/1 Jalabanero F4 3/2 Jalapeño Apache F3 3/3 Jalapeño Ciclón 3/3 Jalapeño Colima 3/3 Jalapeño Coyame4/4 Jalapeño Craig’s Grande3/3 Jalapeño Dark Red 3/1 Jalapeño Dulce 3/3 Jalapeño Farmers Market Potato 3/2 Jalapeño Fooled You 3/3 Jalapeño Gigantia 3/3 Jalapeño Goliath 3/3 Jalapeño Ixtapa X3R 4/4 Jalapeño Jalapa 3/3 Jalapeño Jalastar 3/3 Jalapeño Mammoth 3/3 Jalapeño Master 2/0 Jalapeño Numex Jalmundo 3/3 Jalapeño PS 11435810 3/3 Jalapeño Tajin 3/3 Jalapeño Zapotec 3/2 Jalapeñona 3/2 Madame Jeanette "Long Strain" 3/3 Maldivian White 3/3 Petenero 3/1 Piment d'Espelette 12/6 Puya 3/0 Rocoto de Seda 3/0 Scotch Bonnet "P. Thank you, thanks to the shape the roots are growing downwards quickly and they come off easier when I re-pot Wonderful list!!! I hope you'll reach your goals for this 2013!!! Paolo Thanks, will do my best Very nice varieties list. How do you use all those jalapeno? Grazie, Claudio. I intend to pickle and smoke a lot but if the harvests are to big I also try and sell unripe ones to a indoor farmers market. But there's a lot of people that I know that like Jalapeno's so I can share a lot. Also I wanna pick out the best tasting one and best producing one. A couple of the varieties on the Jalapeno list supposed to be without any heat at all. The Master still haven't germinated, luckily yours is flowering already

meatfreak 500 Posted March 5, 2013 Looking at a 82% germination rate now, must say I can't complain! I re-sowed the ones that haven't sprouted at all, I expect the Panca not to sprout at all. So I added 2 new varieties, Biker Flames F2 and CGN 22181 (Yellow Bouquet). 7-Pot Brain Strain Yellow 4/4 Aji Panca 3/0 Ampuis 3/3 Ancho 3/3 Bhut Jolokia Mustard F2 3/2 Brito's Mystery Peach F3 3/3 Bubblegum 7 F3 4/4 CGN 16905 3/1 CGN 22796 3/1 Chilhuacle Amarillo 3/3 Chilhuacle Negro 3/3 Chilhuacle Rojo 3/3 Chimayo 9/9 Chinese 5 Color 3/3 Coyote Zan White 3/3 Devil Serrano 3/3 Devil's Tongue White 3/0 Dulce de Espana 3/2 El Oro de Ecuador (PI 585244) 3/3 Elephant's Ear 3/3 Fish Pepper 3/3 Gochu 4/4 Green Chinense 3/3 Guajillo 4/4 Habanero Galapagos Isabella Red 3/3 Habanero White Giant 3/1 Jalabanero F4 3/2 Jalapeño Apache F3 3/3 Jalapeño Ciclón 3/3 Jalapeño Colima 3/3 Jalapeño Coyame4/4 Jalapeño Craig’s Grande3/3 Jalapeño Dark Red 3/2 Jalapeño Dulce 3/3 Jalapeño Farmers Market Potato 3/2 Jalapeño Fooled You 3/3 Jalapeño Gigantia 3/3 Jalapeño Goliath 3/3 Jalapeño Ixtapa X3R 4/4 Jalapeño Jalapa 3/3 Jalapeño Jalastar 3/3 Jalapeño Mammoth 3/3 Jalapeño Master 3/1 Jalapeño Numex Jalmundo 3/3 Jalapeño PS 11435810 3/3 Jalapeño Tajin 3/3 Jalapeño Zapotec 3/3 Jalapeñona 3/1 Madame Jeanette "Long Strain" 3/3 Maldivian White 4/4 Petenero 3/3 Piment d'Espelette 12/6 Puya 3/1 Rocoto de Seda 3/0 Scotch Bonnet "P. meatfreak 500 Posted March 22, 2013 Time for an update since I'm almost done transplanting. It's easy to guess which ones I transplanted first on the picture below Still got a few left in the tray. Some of them are already branching out, will be removed as soon as possible because the plant is just to small. This season I wanna get them taller and less branching out so I can use the space in my poly tunnel more efficient (I will try to attempt to trellis all my plants). Also I don't crawl between a jungle when it's harvest time My only Pubescens, the CGN 22796, still need to transplant these. Then there's this Maldivian White, I accidently sowed 5 seeds all sprouted but 3 of them look like this. The other 2 are green. You would say it's the light but then why are these green and not purplish also? The 3 above look a lot like the Chinese 5 Color I got growing also. I know I did not mix up the seeds so, maybe the Maldivian White crossed or something? Will have to wait and see, now if only I had some patience. Thanks for viewing my topic. Lonewolf 18,124 Posted March 22, 2013 Wow! How many plants will you grow? I think the White Maldivian is still unstable; the variety Maldivian (red) appeared in our seeds lists no more than three or four years ago, so it's hard that a new variety with different pods color could be selected and became stable in a such a short time.
meatfreak 500 Posted March 23, 2013 At this moment I have about 200 seedlings, but I will try and grow 2 of each variety out. I do got some more seedlings from the Piment d'Espelette because I wanna get a nice amount of powder. The ones I have left over will be given away to family and friends. I do have the space for it, it's just hard to maintain all those plants. Thanks for the info about the White Maldivian, I didn't know it was an cross. I thought it was an variety from the Maldivian Islands. The color does look nice, will be interesting to grow out both seedlings The Jalapeno Master had a bit of a setback due to both having helmets They survived however so in a matter of time they will catch up with the rest since it's an Annuum. meatfreak 500 Posted April 5, 2013 Some more photo's of seedlings for those that like them Things are moving along and they grow up very quickly! It's pretty obvious the pots are way to small for the amount of plants... stupid of me. I shuffled some plants that were smaller to the middle so they get more light. The Annuum corner. The Chinense corner. Some individual shots. This is a Hawaiian pepper which looks a lot like the Jalapeno. Fish
Toolshed 4,341 Posted April 5, 2013 Hi! I noticed you put more than one plant in the medium sized pots. Are you going to leave them togheter also in the final pots? That's why I, like most of Pepperfriends, grow one single plant per pot, but in the past I saw spectacular results (especially with annuum) with 4-5 adult plants in one single pot. In any case, very good job!!! Dario

That's why I, like most of Pepperfriends, grow one single plant per pot, but in the past I saw spectacular results (especially with annuum) with 4-5 adult plants in one single pot. In any case, very good job!!! Dario I initially planned 1 plant per pot, but due to the lack of space I had to do it this way (it's a P12 pot, 12x12x12). There's a max of 3 per pot now but as you can see it's to much so I won't do this again next season. I'm not growing in pots but in ground, so when I plant them out I will have 2 plants on 1 spot. I will give away the rest I have left over. But like you said I've seen great results with 3 or 4 plants in 1 pot. Most important part is that they get enough minerals and fertilizer. I've seen people grown big plants in small pots like I got mine in right now.
meatfreak 500 Posted April 19, 2013 Anyway, this week the weather was pretty good and I had some time on my hands to spent in the garden. I removed my old tunnel and a lot of garbage that was still there from the previous owner. Stuff like plastic bags, beer bottles, glass, yes glass After removing all the stuff we tilled the ground so it's ready for the new tunnel. Keep in mind it's still a work in progress as I'm doing most of the work alone. Garlic is showing new growth after the frost, also planted onions this week. Tomatoes want to play outside. Overview Chinense Annuum I like these Pubescens Some Chinense leaves are getting big

Toolshed 4,341 Posted April 20, 2013 That piece of land seems like heaven for most of Pepperfriends, I guess!!! In any case, it means a lot of hard work for you, especially considering the unfriendly weather there in the Netherlands! I'm looking forward to see how you will arrange all that space, so... GOOD LUCK! Dario

meatfreak 500 Posted May 18, 2013 Unfortunately more Chinense are getting the same spots on the leaves, I stripped them down. Will keep a very close eye to them, would hate to loose all my Chinense this season I ordered some copper spray just in case, which I also need for my tomatoes. Small update. Since we aren't getting any sun anytime soon (forecasts says for at least another 2 weeks cloudy with rain) I tried to place the poly sheet over my tunnel. Not much later it started to rain a lot so we had to abort. Today when it was dry, I got some more work done this time. It's pretty difficult doing this job on your own but I pretty pleased so far with the result. Work in progress Last plants in the growtent. In trays. Tray in the livingroom because of the bad weather. The other 2 trays are outside due to lack of space. Playing hide and seek And my Numex Twilight's for the front garden.
