A very good start to the weekend!

AlexH 0 Posted January 13, 2010 Day 14: Things are progressing well with the seedlings but I have a question.... Is it normal that Jalapeno seedlings are tall and skinny compared with other C.Annuum varieties? Even though they all germinated at about the same time the Jalapeno are now more than twice as tall as the others, but seem a bit "unsteady"! ...can you confirm if any of you have noticed the same charachteristics???
mich 71 Posted January 13, 2010 I'm sorry, Alex, i've no informations 'bout Jalapeno because.... i don't like it and i never growed it!
kirmen1980 10 Posted January 14, 2010 hello alex First congratulations on the beginning of cultivation, and then if I can afford to give you some advice: seems that your plants are spinning, from so much light, it is very important.
AlexH 0 Posted January 14, 2010 hello alexFirst congratulations on the beginning of cultivation, and then if I can afford to give you some advice: seems that your plants are spinning, from so much light, it is very important. Thanks Kirmen You mean I should try to increase the light intensity? ...or is it the direction that is causing the problem? (or both?)
kirmen1980 10 Posted January 14, 2010 you just have to put other lights or to put more powerful more or less, you should arrive at least 3000-5000 lumens (lumens are written on the packaging of light bulb)
AlexH 0 Posted January 14, 2010 Thanks again Kirmen! I have added another lamp, but I can't find the lumens rating on the lamps I've got. At the weekend I will go to try to find something more powerful... I hope the seedlings will be OK until then?? (they also have the sulight during the day, but the last days have been cloudy unfortunately)
AlexH 0 Posted January 14, 2010 I just did some calculations and I think that at the moment they only have around 2000 lumens. I will try to find something more....!
kirmen1980 10 Posted January 14, 2010 it is very important that you give them so much better if they spin luce.altrimenti remain weak plants that do not fruit well. however since your are a bit spun I suggest you re-pot and bury most of the stem, leaves 2-3 cm off the ground. nothing happens to the plant rather issue new roots. if you do not trust test with a couple of plants, but add the lights as soon as possible. P.S. how many watts are the lights you have now and what kind are they?

That's great adice I'll try it! The lights are 2 x 20W energy saving bulbs (supposed to be equivalent to 100W incandescent) They are positioned about 5cm from the tops of the tallest plants. I will try to add at least two more on Saturday! Thanks again!
kirmen1980 10 Posted January 14, 2010 Please and let me know how it goes then
Lonewolf 18,106 Posted January 14, 2010 A satisfactory setup should give the plants at least 10000 lux (thus much more lumens at the source) Remember full sun in late spring/early summer may have over ten times that intensity
WoodooChili 0 Posted January 14, 2010 Don't worry Alex: you can repair it whith more light. Good green 2010!!!
AlexH 0 Posted January 15, 2010 A satisfactory setup should give the plants at least 10000 lux (thus much more lumens at the source)Remember full sun in late spring/early summer may have over ten times that intensity Thanks Claudio, in practice if my light area is about 0.4 m2 and I can minimise light "leakage" with reflectors that I should need about 4000 lumens ...is that right?? In which case would 4 CFT bulbs of 20 Watt (around 1200 lumens each) be OK...? Maybe my calculations are missing something? ...your advice, as always, is very much appreciated!!! Woodoo Chile ...Thanks for your encouragement!! it is also appreciated!! ...good luck to you too for 2010!
AlexH 0 Posted January 15, 2010 For info I've found an interesting way to measure Lux in the light box... I've posted a topic here on it: https://www.pepperfriends.com/forum/index.p...amp;#entry49121
