Perfect timing, first day of 2023 and a new F1 has emerged.  Must be a good excuse to start a 2023 thread 🙂 as a continuation of my 2022 thread.

First of the year is an F1 for Rocoto Manzano Amarillo Ollantaytambo (C.pubescens) x CAP 500 |(C.eximium), 8 days to emerge

20230101-x062-f1-pt1-8days.jpg.c2ddf7ccbf712ff908c3e677b41b6917.jpg

Looking forward to another year of wild capsicum learning and growing, coupled with some of my own crossing projects.

Happy New Year and I hope everyone has a wonderful 2023 🎆🌱🌶️

Another F1 has joined the 2023 party today, Rocoto Manzano Amarillo Ollantaytambo (C.pubescens) x CGN 20497 (C.cardenasii).

9 days to emerge and not out of its seed case yet.

This shouldn't be happening, day 3 of 2023 and another new interspecific F1 has emerged, one every day this year 🙂

Rocoto Manzano Amarillo Ollantaytambo (C.pubescens) x [CAP 1530 (C.eximium) x USDA Cardenasii]

10 days to emerge.

20230103-x063-f1-pt1-10days.jpg.84f4e1cccfed9968c27e6478f363d779.jpg

At this rate I should have 365 new F1 crosses this year, yes?

Unfortunately the other F1 seeds in germination are for C.chacoense x C.tovarii, C.rabenii x C.tovarii and C.rabenii x C.frutescens, so perhaps the trend won't hold 🤣

Either you are an extremely lucky person, or we can count 363 F1! :lol2: The 2 hybrids you mentioned should be technically impossible, with the monograph C. tovarii has officially become a separate clade (and deepening the monograph shows that the various differentiations were made on the basis of genetic research done by Dr. Carolina Carrizo) so it shouldn't just be an interspecific hybrid that has never been successful so far, but also between different clades… Anyway,  good luck!

Hey, where is your sense of adventure? 🤠🤡🤣

I like trying the occasional impossible cross.

In this case I was clinging to a small piece of hope from this 1999 paper:

"When the hybridization of C. baccatum × C. tovarii was performed, F1, F2 and backcross progenies were successfully obtained. In addition, a successful hybridization of C. praetermissum × C. tovarii was also obtained."

Tong, N., Bosland, P.W. Capsicum tovarii, a new member of the Capsicum baccatum complex. Euphytica109, 71–77 (1999). https://doi.org/10.1023/A:1003421217077

Very few papers ever go further than seeing if F1 seeds are produced and germinate. This paper discusses both onward growing into F2 and backcrossing in the context of C.baccatum x C.tovarii. For C.rabenii (praetermissum) it simply mentions they successfully hybridised.

Very interesting. It will be interesting to follow these crosses. I did not know this publication. However, they are talking about C. baccatum complex, which I believe has already been excluded to date for C. tovarii. This makes it even more interesting.

Glad to confuse the subject for you 😎

As for the C.chacoense x C.tovarii attempt that I got F1 seeds for. I attempted that based on the 2021 study published via PLOS. In that, if you look at the data behind the report you find that they claim to have successfully germinated F1 seeds using these species.

If you download the supporting Excel workbook and look at the "Germination" tab, you'll see cross ID CCA16082 where they achieved 40% F1 germination based on a 5 seed sample.  It is a shame they didn't complete the "F1 sterile" column on the dataset or report on any other outcome. I'd guess they weren't interested or ran out of time/money.

There are some other copy'n'paste errors in their datasheets which I confirmed with them are errors, notably germination on a Flexuosum cross! No surprises that Flexuosum wasn't really involved.

Parry C, Wang Y-W, Lin S-w, Barchenger DW (2021) Reproductive compatibility in Capsicum is not necessarily reflected in genetic or phenotypic similarity between species complexes. PLoS ONE 16(3): e0243689. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0243689

I also have some F1 seeds for C.rabenii x C.frutescens in germination, the 1999 Tong/Bosland report didn't have any luck with those. The 2021 report indicates an entry on the "Successful Crosses" tab but shows no corresponding entry in the "Germination" tab. So I'm unsure if that means they got a fruit but it had no seeds or if they just didn't attempt F1 germinations.

Obviously I expect all of these crazy F1 seeds to fail but I occasionally dream.

Yes, that part also caught my attention when I found this paper.  I didn't attempt this last year but you can be sure the pollen will be flying this year 😉

@L0rdn40 well let's see if the correct pollen hit the spot!

5 F1 seeds planted, first one up after 37 days.

C.rabenii x C.tovarii, hopefully 🤞

Did it work or not? Another one where I'll need to wait to see if the cross took correctly.

F1s emerging after 41 days for C.rabenii x Cabari Burung Ungu (C.frutescens) with some luck.

And the potential C.rabenii x C.tovarii F1 still ok

Interspecific F1 seedling for C.rabenii x Cabai Burung Ungu (C.frutescens)

Starting to see some anthocyanin patching trait from the father. Hopefully a good sign, will wait for first true leaves for confirmation.
