Monograph of wild and cultivated chili peppers (Capsicum L., Solanaceae)

The long awaited Monograph of wild and cultivated chili peppers (Capsicum L., Solanaceae) has now been published.

There is a lot to read, indeed.

I just discovered the number of different species I saw in the wild grew by 2: C.mirum and C.muticum.

 

I also wish to underline that the monograph contains some photos from Pepperfriends' members (Pr0digalSon and me) and links to our database  

 

The wonderful photos taken by John on February 2020 were choosen to document the new species C.mirum!

I wish to highlight that this new species is classified as critically endangered; I hope that people living in the area where it grows don't run to collect fruits and seeds

John's photo of the new C.mirum (previously known as "undescribed species") is also on the PhytoKeys newsletter I received this morning  

 

 

This means that, according the staff of PhytoKeys, it's the best photo in the monograph

Leggerò ogni dettaglio con più calma, attualmente ho letto in modo approssimativo.

L'articolo è estremamente completo e ricco.

 

Per ora ciò che più ha catturato la mia attenzione è:

-I dubbi rispetto a C.geminifolium, C.lycianthoides e C.scolnikianum sembrano essere risolti dalla nuova classificazione che vede C.geminifolium sinonimo di C.scolnikianum, e la specie con il fiore molto simile a quello del C.lanceolatum ma di colore giallo (la faccio breve per intenderci eh) che anche negli erbari era descritta come C.scolnikianum, ora si chiama C.lycianthoides , usato in precedenza come sinonimo di C.geminifolium.

-Molte più foto di specie come C.longidentatum e C.hookerianum ad esempio.

-Il C.mirum finalmente ha un nome. Nel 2019 la ho vista in natura a Bananal e con @Lonewolf avevamo realizzato che fosse qualcosa di nuovo. Sono contento anche per il fatto che sono state messe le foto di John che sono meravigliose. Una specie così bella.

-La divisione delle varietà botaniche di C.villosum con l'introduzione di C.muticum.

 

Stasera avrò più calma e modo di leggere meglio

Inoltre se da un lato è vero che c’è stato un primo tentativo di fare chiarezza tra Capsicum geminifolium, Capsicum scolnikianum e Capsicum lycianthoides come hai ben detto, dall’altro continuano a circolare immagini di fiori totalmente diversi classificati in queste specie.

Thanks for all the great work yourself, John and others have done to increase the information known, sharing wonderful photos and generally making the capsicum world a better place through your commitment, enthusiasm and willingness to go explore 👏 Wonderful to see some of your material being used in this publication and pinning some new names on the unknowns.

Noto altre cose:

1. Capsicum dusenii è sparito come nome, adesso quello che conosciamo come Capsicum dusenii è diventato Capsicum cornutum. Non ho ben capito che fine abbia fatto il “vecchio” Capsicum cornutum, probabilmente è stato accorpato al Capsicum recurvatum. Resta da capire come classificare il Capsicum cornutum di Cunha a fiore bianco documentato nel database;
2. Capsicum praetermissum è stato ridenominato, da oggi sarà Capsicum rabenii;
3. Mi pare di capire guardando la tassonomia nell’articolo, ma su questo chiedo conferma a qualcuno più esperto perché è l’unico punto su cui ancora non l’ho avuta, che Capsicum pubescens sia stato tirato fuori dalla purple corolla clade e classificato in una clade a parte così come Capsicum tovarii è stato definitivamente tirato fuori dalla baccatum clade.
