ChilliCrosser 2022

ChilliCrosser

As one grow log ends, so another begins.

Currently I have some F1 plants growing which will hopefully give good results and then provide F2 seeds for growing during 2022. I have a number of crossing projects which I'm excited to focus on during 2022 from these F1 plants.  I'll add more details of those shortly.

Other than my crosses, my 2022 growing will also be focussed on my other interest which is growing wilds so I continue to learn more about the wonderful world of Capsicum. Assuming the germination gods are favourable I'll be growing some, or all, of:

  • C.Galapagoense - one of my favourites from previous grows
  • C.Praetermissum - a mixture of these, I already have two seedlings started from seeds I gathered from one of my own previous grows
  • C.Chacoense - CAP 1445 and possibly one other
  • C.Eximium - CAP 500 and/or CGN19198
  • C.Lanceolatum
  • C.Rhomboideum
  • C.Tovarii - yet another germination attempt 🤣
  • C.Cardenasii - CGN 20297 and/or USDA
  • C.Flexuosum - another favourite that I haven't grown recently 😊
  • C.Baccatum var baccatum - PI 260567
  • C.Annuum var glabriusculum - Cappuccino Chiltepin

Noticed some finger trouble when typing earlier. That should of course be CGN 20497!

A quick video tour of some of my crossing results from 2021. A few of these will be continued in 2022 when I've planned how many plants I can grow.

That's a pepper I'd like to see... I keep my fingers crossed for a black/purple version of the starfish :)

Only successful in getting this single F1 plant, I'll have to guard it with my life 😬

It being self-fertile will be the first challenge, if I get past that then probably have to back-cross to retain a starfish appearance.

Correction for the picture above ^^^

Seedling on the right is PI 260567, not CAP 500.

Starting to get some colour change on my #stripeystarfish F1. This is the yellow mother based version. Brazilian Starfish Yellow x Sugar Rush Stripey.

Example of the flower characteristics I'm seeing on Plant 2 of X034 F1 (Sugar Rush Stripey x Pimenta De Neyde)

  • Dark stems and foliage from the Chinense
  • Calyx and corolla from the Baccatum
  • Hard to see in this photo but I believe the anthers and stigma are purple from the Chinense. I will try to get a photo of them from an unopened flower.
  • Pollen seems to be present 😍

One of my old X011 F2 plants about to produce its first bonchi crop. Originally sown May 2020, converted to a bonchi mid-2021.

It has just received a light prune, some ripe pods and some unripe. This plant produced multiple pod phenos including that shown with a stinger tail.

Apricot peach pods shown are fully ripe.

A better photo of the interspecific cross flowers on my X034 project (Sugar Rush Stripey x Pimenta De Neyde).

This one has just opened, easier to see the Chinense coloured anthers & stigma along with the Baccatum corolla.

F1 progress summary for my X037 crossing project. Foliage colours are the only observable trait difference versus the mother at this point.
