Seed treatment experiment-Which is the fastest?

Recommended Posts

PurpleJellyfish

This year I've done an experiment with different presoaking methods and treatment of seeds. My goal was to find the fastest way to sprout seeds. All seeds were disinfected, except number 2, because I read that chamomile tea is a mild disinfectant. Seeds were 24 hours in solution.
They were from single variety; Sugar rush peach twisty.

I mixed 8 different solutions:
1. No treatment, control
2. Tap water
3. Mild chamomile tea
4. KNO3 (2-3 g in 300 ml)
5. "Osmopriming" (Salt-21g + 1 l of distilled water)
6. Destiled water
7. Big start (2 ml in 1 l)

8. Bio roots plus (2 ml in 1 l)

28°C constant temperature.

Here are some graphs and tables about experiment:

Conclusion: Seeds which were presoaked, sprouted faster and in higher percentage. The "best" treatment from above is KNO3.
The biggest surprise was destiled water. I don't know why this happened. I thought the results won't be that good. Maybe someone could explain this phenomenon?

Tomorrow I am going to do another experiment with C. flexuosum seeds.

Looking at your data is very funny to notice that commercial product that promise "miracles" have the worst performances!! :D

About your question on distilled water it's hard to say, maybe the point is in your tap water instead of distilled.

In some cases tap water is very rich of minerals.

Did you use tap water or distilled water to prepare the several solutions (where not said explicitly), that is n. 3,4,7,8 ??

Crazy isn't it😆 I expected much more from those (7 and 8).

Tap water was used in all solutions except in n. 5 and 6. The pH is around 7,6 and water hardness 130-150 mg/1 L.
