City garden in Finland

Recommended Posts

.:Dam:.

Year has changed so new topic for this year. I have already started to sow some seeds, only pubescenses for now: Locato, c04896, CGN 22796, GRIF 9345, PI 355394 and PI 355811. Locato is only one that grows now.

IMG_4556.jpg

Poor picture and so tiny Locato. Other seeds has been from 22 december 2013 but nothing has happened. About week ago I¨ve putted more seeds but looks like I am too late with these. Should I germinate more, I don't know yet. Maybe some chinense and annums too in a month or two. Most likely no more baccatums for this year at all. And looks like some of baccatums from 2012-2013 are not going to survive this winter, even less baccatums for me. I have some seeds what I have never ever grown at all but no idea what I should try to grow. CAP 489, 1446, 1153, 1035 are something I want to grow. Torenog too but no more seeds :logik: Cumari Pollux? Quadrato d'Asti giallo / rosso for sure. Aji Cacho de Cabra, absolutely. Maybe thats enough for this year :ninja:

Good luck mate!

Mi scusi, force was not with me this time... Some plants died. Capezzoli di Scimmia, also Lemon Drop, Criolla Sella, Champion, Bhut Jolokia and maybe Trinidad Perfume. But something bad (as broken 3 bones in chest) something good too!

IMG_4757.jpg

PI 355811 a.k.a Ultimate Pube looks as good as it is.

IMG_4761.jpgLocato is pruned a bit but alive

IMG_4768.jpgOther seems to be about ok, at least alive. What I have here is under a dome, Pantano Romanesco, pomodori. 25 seeds, 8 alive. Others are rucola in Zen Grow sistema on top right, not looking so good. Should put those on soil as soon as possible. In Pepsican, Flexuomums. Rest, Quadrato d'Asti Rosso & giallo, Pimenta da Neyde, CAP 470, Aji Cacho de Cabra, Capezzoli di Scimmia (retry), 45 er (2004), Super Pimenta Hot Pepper, Xmas Chinese.

IMG_4721.jpg

Sometimes I do want to make some food too, as ravioli. But as these looks like 8bit NES Mario, your princess is in another castle, so are these. Looks terrible, taste is splendido! (because there is no such word as spelndissimo?) Pomodori pyre on dough, surprisingly yes, chili on it and also in filling. I also have pictures about chilitagliatelle with raw beef and sauce with a bit of mozzarella. Surely not posting it here. Primi piatti / second piatti?

No mate, do you know why some plants are dead? :(

Rovioli? Spelndissimo? What have I written... Sorry about typing errors.

I am not 100% sure why some plants died but I have a good guess. Lemon Drop and Criolla Sella died because lack of light, I did not want to put my lamp on this winter at all. Trinindad Perfume dried because lack of water, not sure if its going to be ok again. Bhut Jolokia died on lack of light too, also Capezzoli di Scimmia. Capezzoli was in nursery table for a while, got new green leafs but I think I moved it too early to windowsill. Champion died on my battle against aphids. Aphids died too and now those are in my Aji Cristal. But, now I know how to kill aphids but not plant at same time. Lemon Drop was from 2012, others from last year. Also this winter was a bit strange. Not so long cold periods and all the time cloudy so not so much sun.

Today I should trim my plants a bit, do a health check and water those properly.

Good news and splendido news. Plants about ok and my brother found webshop in close to me where I can buy italian ingredients. Coppa, mortadella, bresaola, scamorza, pecorino, farina, caffe and so on. Cmq, to the good news.

IMG_4805.jpg

Trinidad Perfume, alive. Barely but, alive. Not so keen to this one but unable to toss it away. This had near death experience several times, still hanging on.

IMG_4793.jpg

CAP 470, capsicum eximium. Helmet issues. Had before, I was too hasty to remove it so I got in one hand helmet, in other hand stem. What I needed was patience. I suppose this one survives.

IMG_4777.jpg

CAP 907, pubescens, stem is a bit brokenish. Has been since last summer but looks its not care that much about it. Lovely taste and rareish I think.

IMG_4818.jpg

Ultimate Pube (PI 355811) is a bit lazy. Not strong enough to stand up alone. Why? Under investigation. Looks alive but limb.

IMG_4821.jpg

Pimenta da Neyde and Super Red Pimenta Hot Pepper in new pots. For me this second one sounds a bit insane. Super Red Pimenta Hot Pepper, pimenta means hot pepper :logik:

IMG_4827.jpg

Sight of my other bambino. Some needs repotting soon, maybe. On middle of pic there is Plugg Box with pomodori, Pantano Romanesco. Those are only tomatoes what I will grow this season. I like those and I might get 100% pure seeds for future. Next year it might be only Cherokee Purple. Mi scusi about macchina photografica, iPhone.

If any of you readers are in Facebook and are in to wild capsicums, find Wild Capsicum Community. Its just brilliant place to see other capsicum maniacs and there is also beautiful pictures available. Some of those are also giving seeds. World Wide Wild Capsicum Community. I got permission to invite anyone who is in to wild capsicums, so, welcome!

Despite some problems, things go on ;)

It's nice your interest for italian food

There is no correct term for "splendidissimo" because "splendido" is already "superlativo assoluto" (I don't know how to translate this).

You can use other terms, such as "sublime" or the generic term "superlativo" (as adjective, it means in general "the maximum possible").

Wild Capsicum Community?

I don't like FB, but I cannot lose this ;)

About interest in Italian food, I like good food. Italian food is good and somewhat easy to do so why not. I need to find some instructions to Italian breads too. In Youtube there is some interesting instructions I most surely need to try again and again

Splendissimo is like rapidissomo. Rapido means fast I think, rapidissimo means "faster than speed of light". So splendissimo means something beyond splendido. Sorry about my fragile italiano.

Allora, time to post something what happened since last post.

IMG_4818.jpg

This is Ultimate Pube a week ago

IMG_8752.jpg

Same plant today. Its still in nursery and only thing that has changed is that I installed fan to that place. Same light, temperature, moisture, fertilization and so on. But, now its able to stand alone without any ropes and so on.

IMG_8761.jpg

My curtains are ecologic, green ones. Only bad thing is that I have some capsicums on desk below and those are not going to get enough light. But, soon I hope I can put some of these on balcony when its warm enough even at nights. As you can see in picture, no more snow but everything looks kinda dead outside.

IMG_8762.jpg

Fluorescent Purple has beautiful leaves and it has started to bloom. Such a lovely plant, more sun it gets, more "damaged" leaves looks. Personally I also like those flowers.

IMG_8764.jpg

Stem in this is bit broken but that does not bother at all, plant is ok. I think in one month, this also could go to balcony. That is what I hope, not so sure yet...

OK, been too busy and have not been at home for month. Work issues and so on. Some of capsicums are ok, some are not so good shape, those are dead. Canario, Bhut Jolokia, Black Naga, Trinidad Perfume. Canario got too much water, Trinidad Perfume too little. Well, I was going to give those away anyway but surely not like this. More bad news, in here Finland its very cold right now. One italian technician was wondering if next week winter has arrived. First it was +28 C°, next week only 10. And now its about 10 C°, still. Few weeks ago it was +3 C° at my balcony and outside very nice raining, hailstones and snow. What a beautiful Finnish summer  Last time this happened about 50 years ago. I surely hope that this "summer" will get wormer and soon. Forecast says that maybe next week sun will appear but its too soon to say. Sunrise 4:07, sunset at 23:01. A lot of sun, in theory but actually not so much because clouds and rains. And because temperature so low, its hard to grow anything.

But, something good too!

DSCF0014.JPG

Small Thai Hot has first flowers. Last year this very same plant had none of flowers so this is major progress? Somehow I thought that this would be annuum but looks more like frutescens. Flower is very very green and internal parts ( do not know what those are in english / italian) have somewhat purplish hue. One pod growing and when temperature goes up at least a bit, I might see what this really is.

DSCF00162.jpg

Same plant, different angle. Notice that I am not so good with cameras..

DSCF00182.jpg

Flexuosum has something hanging too. Massive improvement from last year because then this plant had none flowers nor pods.

DSCF0039.jpg

Habanero White Bullet grows in shadows and drops about 2/3 of its flowers. Manually polluted more than 100 flowers and I think this is enough. It is just so boring to several times everyday.

DSCF0035.jpg

CAP 470 :cat:

DSCF0043.jpg

Because of some wilds, other plans did not get so much light... Some nearly died and because I was not at home so much, things got serious. These were up to roof so I needed to cut those down. Ulupica large had some flowers and pods but it was too late. Maybe next year. Galapagoense, same thing. CAP 1487, well, this one looks like it liked my scissor action?

DSCF00212.jpg

At balcony, pubescenses are a bit messy too. Lot of pods growing so I leave those alone for now..

DSCF00222.jpg

Stem of Tepin, looking better.

DSCF0041.JPG

This leaf is from Habanero Yellow. Now those same spots starts to move to other plants too what are near this. First leaves gets spotty, then those turns to yellow and drops off. This is why no more Bhut Jolokia nor Black Naga. Duke Pequin does not looks so happy either and CAP 499 looks suffering too. But, I have 2 mystery capsicums that has been close to this Habanero and those does not care so much?? Leaves gets spotty too but progress is a lot slower.

Question;

Should I take this Habanero Yellow outside and kill it with fire or is this just fine?

Did not have so much time to spend at home. That could mean bad things, very bad. Gatta ok, my mom was visiting quite often. About capsicums, not so well. Picture tells more than thousand words, ( 2 woman's speaks more than thousand pictures)...

DSCF0044.JPG

Flexuosum is dying for no reason :fool:

DSCF0046.JPG

Something happens anyway and looks like it is going to survive after all. Plant did not got dry or too wet, absolutely no idea what has happened. Ultra care for this for now.

DSCF0048.JPG

In this picture, mostly pubescenses. Or at least what you can see is pubescenses. There is also Heart Throb and PDN and some others too but not so visible.

DSCF0051.JPG

Aji Christal is ripening and needs some support and scissors too. Some aphids in this and growing is a bit lazy.

DSCF0052.JPG

Ripening PI 585273

And because I was away so much, bad things happened. Plants got too big, some of those, and others got less sun -> not good. What to do? Cut down others at this point...

DSCF0114.jpg

And after. Not so much cutting in this one, only dry branches away, mostly.

Then, to happier news!

DSCF0132.JPG

I went to flowershop to buy some more plants. Not place where you can buy roses or similar, this place is where you can buy something to your balcony or possible yard.. This one is PI 593618, pubescens. Supposed to be quite hot one too. 7€ with pods in it for this. Looks poorly and this was about worst plant there was but all I could care was stem of this plant. And the fact that I did not have this before.

DSCF0138.JPG

DSCF0139.JPG

I also bought 2 flexuosums. Price tag was 7€ too but I selected one of poorest condition again (because the stem) and got these 5€ each. And because I've chosen "lost cases" I got these 3 only with 15€. There was plenty flexuosum plants but I chose to buy only these 2. Now I have 42 pots with capsicums, some of those has more than one plant but it is easier for me to count like this.

DSCF0143.JPG

Capezzoli di Scimmia repotted. Had some aphids in it but I sprayed mixture to it. 500 ml water (about), 3 ml natriumbihydroxide and day after aphids went to sleep. I do not know so much about those social life but few days after I did not see any signs of them. No sleeping ones, no net at all. Maybe they pack their thing and leaves, I just care that they do not came again.

DSCF0147.JPG

CAP 470... Aphids. And not so much water  But, this does not looks so bad. Actually this is looking very good. More branches appearing and plant is very alive.

DSCF0154.JPG

Small Thai Hot has flowers

DSCF0156.JPG

And more flowers are following. But, there is always but with this one. Second year this one got flowers and I got my hopes up. Appears to tough case. OK, it has flowers, fine. But, flowers should turn, at some point at least to pods. If light and temperature is ok. 2 things about this beautiful Finnish summer this year. And this summer, what a summer it has been. Record braking at least. First coldest june in 50 years. Then hottest july in 50 years... And now hot sunny days in row since 1972. Tomorrow supposed to be only 25 C°. Next week its possibly 33 C°. Neat. About picture quality, I did not want to resize pictures anymore manually, I used Automator and looks like that does not care so much about quality as I do. Few seconds and these pics were resized automatically so I do not care at this point. Maybe someday I can make it work a bit better and add watermark to pictures too. Is it ok to use pepperfriends.com to these pics? Maybe too soon to ask but anyway.

More good or even splendido news. I purchased also new cat, ex stray cat. 100€ for cat that hates human hands and I can pet only with my toes. And she shows her love by biting to my toes.. Very strong too, she hit surprisingly strong with her paws to my hand. My old cat it petrified and does not want to go near to my new cat. And vice versa. I hope those two are going to be friends at some point and this new cat does not eat my plants :cat:

Haven't written anything for a while because nothing interesting has not happened. Actually quite bad news first. Habanero Sudden Death, Lanceolatum, Numex Bailey Piquin, Fluorescent Purple are dead because humidity inside seems to be to low. Most of plants are inside because winter is coming, outside is about +3C° and at night its below that. Balcony has glasses and there are only 2 capsicums + 4 tomatoes, Pantano Romanesco. This year tomatoes did not perform so well, only one tomato...

DSCF0213.jpg

DSCF0164.jpg

My gardening assistants did tiny tornado in balcony and some of chilies bended a bit. Cosmetic issues only, all of these are ok and are doing just fine inside now.

IMG_8815.jpg

Super Red Pimenta Hot Pepper has aphids. Or, now had those. It is inside now and I have cut it smaller a bit but still need to cut it more after it ripens one pod.

DSCF0201.jpg

Small Thai Hot is very slow to do anything. First year and not even single flower, second year lot of flowers but only 2 pods. And seemed to be green forever. I got 10 seeds from this and naturally I wanted to taste this. One small bit from end and at same second I burning sensation all over my mouth what was quite long lasting. And it was good taste. Too bad that it is so hard to get pods from this... Now it has about 20 flowers but no guarantee that those will turn to pods :logik:

DSCF0239.jpg

White Bullet Habanero in bedroom with fairly limited light is doing just fine and has still a lot of flowers that turns to pods as long as I will manually pollinate those. I surely need to cut this down soon because it is getting too big to that position.

DSCF0245.jpg

45 ER is also in bedroom ripening it pods. Quite small and I got brilliant idea, eat one raw. Quick rinse with water and to the mouth. First I was thinking that "this is very good and not so hot at all" This is annuum x chinense. So first I got good taste and small hotness. 5 seconds later a bit better taste and a lot of hotness that was just raising and raising. Yoghurt was kind a useless. Very good but takes a while for next time when I will eat it raw. I was thinking to take seeds from this because this is from 2006 and first was 2005 so from those seeds I should get F3 generation and I want to see and taste what those will be.

DSCF0246.jpg

At one meeting I got some seeds, Tovarii. Only problem is that there is no guarantee that those are pure seeds. I got some cat hair, shot glass and put some seeds to grow. That is only way to find out are those pure or not :ike:

DSCF0247.jpg

I took one branch from one Flexuosum and now it looks so much better. But, I need more of these for sure. At some point I want to make mini greenhouse to balcony and test if this can survive winter in it and wake up at spring. I have 3 different flexuosums so no big harm if this one dies.

DSCF0250.jpg

Some chilies at kitchen. Heart Throb, Jalapeño, Locato, Numex Twilight, Small Thai Hot, Pimenta de Neyde, Turbo Pube Red and Starfish on floor because impossible to put on table, its a bit over 2 meter long.

DSCF0251.jpg

Other of my over 8 years old chili is having some health issues and not sure what is wrong with this. Leafs just turn to brown, dries and falls off. No totally lost case because it has some green leafs too but I am quite worried about this and if it is a goner I will be so sorrow about it.

DSCF0254.jpg

Galapagoense needs some attention too and it has changed places with CAP 470 to get more light and care. It is almost ok but needs extra care for a while.

DSCF0255.jpg

Tepin and its "huge" sized pods. This is first year for flowers and for pods. This needs some scissor action later. Looks just nice but a bit too big.

DSCF0260.jpg

My gardening assistant's that caused that mini tornado in balcony. We had some issues because one on left teased this new assistant causing this new cat to use some pots in balcony and my sofa as litter box. Not anymore :queen: I can almost pet this newcomer almost anytime I want and with hand. I also can sometimes kiss her to head but bellykissing is very big no no. They still are not co operating so well but now I do not need to worry that chili pots are used as toilet.

DSCF0265.jpg

Quadrato di a'Astis are only capsicums at balcony now. There is also 4 Pantano Romanesco tomatoes because lack of space inside. I got some seeds from these but still I want to keep these for next year if possible. For me it is huge waste just to bin these if I can keep these alive during our long winter. As you can see, threes has no leafs anymore.

DSCF0266.jpg

Some of plants that are in living room. I might need to fix some lights for these. Last winter I had no extra light for these but I am thinking to put some light this year.

DSCF0229.jpg

Lasagne with chicken. I just wanted to try to do it with chicken because I like it and I can do it. May be wrong thing to do but I liked it. In dough I've put some powdered fungo porcino. This year was very good year for mushrooms, for chilies not so much. I went to forest and found in 15 minutes basket full for mushrooms, mainly these fungo porcino. I sent these 2 jars dried to friend in Italy because I know it is not so easy to have these and a bit expensive too. In chicken sauce there is some White Bullet Habenero powder too and some Pimenta de Neyde and CAP 907 in cheese sauce.

At this week I was in Italy (MO) for few days. When I arrived to Bologna airport, I could easily notice that there is still summer and could wear just t shirt, no jacket at all. Nice weather and superb food, it was quite hard to come back here...

IMG_5893.jpg

Last night we went to trattoria and I found there this candy jar. 2.8 kg and 75€ price was too much for me, there would be some transporting issues to take this with me. I got one 120g 7.70€ jar with me and one Italian friend asked why I have not told him before I like these, his parents cellar is full of these  I surely want to make my own next year, could any of you advice what is good chili for this and also some recipe for doing these?
