Following the advice of Nipostrato a few weeks ago I began transplanting extra germinations, rather than thinning them. Today I did my fourth group of bare root transplants (due to some surprising late germinations of Congo Black and 7 Pod Long!)
...I thought I would take a few photos to help explain the technique to anyone else who wants/needs to try it... The first step is to get the seedligs at the right stage (just cotyledons), I have done some at the 4 leaf stage but the root system is much more developed, so the risk of damage is greater ![]() The second step is to prepare the new pots, I am using seed and transplant compost... make sure it is very wet! ![]() The third step is to remove the seedling from its original pot, I have been using a small scalpel as it allows me to accurately remove the seedling, and avoid damaging the other plants... ![]() Here you can see the seedling, with roots intact! ![]() Put the seedling in its new pot (making a small hole with the scalpel to allow the roots to go down), and then press the compost very gently around the stem. ![]() ...all done!
